A while a back i made a post sharing a list of 5 reasons why i liked DestroyTwitter more then TweetDeck (Link). I was shocked that it was such a hit, over 800 hits in one day. Well its been a while since iv used TweetDeck so i thought id try the new version, and see what i thought. Im going to give a list of some good and bad things about it, compared DestroyTwitter.
Disclamer.
Please forgive me if my assumptions are wrong about TweetDeck and if there is a preference i may have over looked.
These are just my thoughts at this time, my feelings could change, or the apps may change and effect my feelings.
The Good things about TweetDeck
I realize now that with my last post, i didn’t list anything thats good about TweetDeck, so ill start with a few good things about TweetDeck.
Iphone App. With the news that flash and air apps might be able to run iPhone OS, this wont be such a great thing.
Syncing read/unread. If you have TweetDeck installed on multiple computer, you can have the read/unread status of tweets synced between those computers and even sync to your iPhone app.
Multiple Developers. As far as i know DestoryTwitter is a one man developer who works in his spare time. But from what i can tell there is a team of developers… .. developing TweetDeck. More is always better they say (who is they btw?)
The Bad things about TweetDeck
The first two bad things TweetDeck were on my previous post and i still feel they are the most important.
Memory Usages. Memory is a big thing for me, and should be for everyone. The creator of Destorytwitter did a great job at managing the memory usage. He even wrote an article about it. When i have DestoryTwitter running it uses around 50mb of memory. If i recall correctly TweetDeck did an update to try to do something about it. Well they failed, Currently running at 104mb of memory.
Desktop Real Estate. It probly doesnt mean much to thoes who have 19,20, or even 27 inch monitors (that new mac looks sweet), but for me, right now anyways, im stuck with 2 15 inch monitors running at 1024×768 resolution. So the size of an app that is always going to be open is important to me.
Columns. When you first start TweetDeck you start with one column. All Friends. You have to add in your self the Mentions/Replies column and Direct Messages column. Also to search you have to add a new search column, search what you want, remove the column and confirm you want to remove the column when your done with the search.
The worst part about the columns is you have to manually scroll though them. Say i just got a DM and i missed the little popup window, i have to click on the small scroll bar and scroll over. In DestroyTwitter i just click the Messages tab at the top.
Window Frame. One main feature DestroyTwitter has is to remove the chrome window frame. Iv never liked the chrome window that is default on all windows apps. I like that I dont see it much. iTunes doesn’t have it, YIM doesn’t have it, and most of my other apps either dont have it or are full screen.
Config Window. It looks good, and does it job perfectly, but if i have the window at its smallest (the way i would runn it) id have to resize the window to be able to see all of the config window. It should fit in any possible sized window.
No Hot Keys. DestroyTwitter has some problems with hot keys, but they are better then nothing. Its very nice to be able to tab over and hit ctrl-t (cmd-t for mac?) and start typing my tweet. Hot keys for anything are great.
So in conclusion (did i really say that?) TweetDeck has its advantages and is probably better if you just happen to be a twitter whore. Meaning if you follow everyone and their uncle, like keeping up on certain topics by using searches, have big monitors and have more then one computer TweetDeck is good. But if your like me, and you just wanna tweet and see what your friends are tweeting, and dont need any extra fluff then use DestroyTwitter.
P.s. im looking forward to the new DestroyTwitter version that should be coming out soon. Jonnie said it would come out in October… he said it, do i need to link to the tweet?
